Firstly, I know nothing about chess, so I was in disbelief by how interested I became with this show (being that approx. 80% of Queens Gambit is Beth playing chess). However, what makes the show so intriguing is the character herself.
She is awkward, yet brave, determined, and beautiful. She has such an interesting look. Big bright eyes and stunning red hair. To die for.
But let’s get back on topic.
What makes her “brave and determined” is her attitude toward everything and everyone.
- Speaks her mind
- Is unafraid to go after what she wants (no matter the repercussions)
- Carries out herself with an unmatched confidence
- Ultimately believes in herself 100%
Her confidence is in itself a main event. In the first few episodes, when first learning to play chess, she is invited to a school to play against a bunch of older guys. She beats them all. And there’s like 30 of them.
Her mentor, Mr. Shaibel, has definitely taught her not only something she loves but also about loving herself. Chess has given her something to appreciate about herself. And as a young person, that is such an essential milestone to reach. A milestone in which some of us never reach.
As she gets older, she faces discrimination, doubters, and naysayers. BUT she proves herself. Time and time again.
Life Lessons From Beth Harmon
I really resonate with her character because of her drive and passion.
You see.. the thing about life is that..
If we are somehow able to replicate (in our own way) the way others have found success. There is also a chance we might find it too.
So, my takeaway from this show is that when you believe in yourself no one can take that from you without your consent. So don’t let anyone take it away from you. Hold on to it, preserve it, treasure it, and remember why you believe in yourself.
And humbly, with poise, dignity, and a straight punch to the balls, show “them” what you’re worth. In return they shall humbly (or arrogantly, or maybe not at all) accept defeat.
