The Most Influential Figure In Fashion: Anna Wintour
Anna Wintour was 15 years old when she started working at a London clothing store, 18 when she dropped out of Noth London Collegiate, and soon after dropped out of the fashion classes she was taking at her parents’ request.
“You either know fashion or you don’t.”― Anna Wintour
Anna Wintour is one of the most influential women in the fashion industry. Her influence is felt through generations of women and she is still editor in chief at one of the greatest magazines ever. I’m not heavily into the fashion industry but her character and style have definitely made a lasting impression on me.
Her eternally perfect bob cut, black Chanel sunglasses, tough demeanor, no-bullshit vibe, is everything I aspire to be. A woman of power.
Anna Wintour’s life in itself is a great example of how you just need to believe in your vision to achieve your goal. From the very beginning of her career, she knew where she wanted to be. Being fired, dropping out of college, and moving to a completely different country did not stop her from prevailing. She overcame every obstacle with perseverance and reached a pinnacle of great success.
- She is known for wearing similar outfits every day to reduce decision-making fatigue, as a lot of famous people do. But instead of plain white tee’s and jeans, she has a wardrobe full of print dresses. She even has multiple variations of the same shoe (she changes the width of the straps, the height of heels, slightly different shades of tan).
- She loves tennis, and wakes up at 5 am just to play!
- Her signature sunglasses. “I can sit in a show and if I’m bored out of my mind, nobody will notice.. at this point, they will have become, really, armor.” She recently told CNN that she wears them to “avoid people knowing what she’s thinking about.” “They help me when I’m feeling a bit tired or sleepy,” she went on.

In the end, I do respond to my own instincts. Sometimes they’re successful, and obviously, sometimes they’re not. But you have to, I think, remain true to what you believe in.― Anna Wintour
I learned from that that the most important thing is to be decisive and sure and to impart that to people working for you. … Even if you aren’t sure of yourself, pretend that you are because it makes it clearer for everyone else.― Anna Wintour

Just be true to yourself, and listen as much as one is able to other people whose opinions you respect and look up to but in the end, it has to come from you. You can’t really worry too much by looking to the left and the right about what the competition is doing or what other people in your field are doing. It has to be a true vision.

If you can’t be better than your competition, just dress better.
